Arsenal came away from a tense away game in Kiev with a 1-1 draw last night.

It was a game that Arsenal had many chances to win, but in the end were almost lucky to grab the point in the closing minutes.

Blackburn 0 – Arsenal 4

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

In another excellent Premiership performance, Arsenal today scored 4 goals away at Blackburn.
Arsenal never looked threatened by Blackburn, and completely controlled the game, keeping the ball very well, able to pass it between themselves at will.

Arsenal 3 – 0 Newcastle

Monday, September 1st, 2008

Arsenal are back! Saturday saw Arsenal taking on Newcastle at the Emirates, putting in a stunning performance and thrashing Newcastle 3-0.
Right from the start of the game Arsenal were rolling the ball about the pitch fluently and creating chances at will. Van Persie scored early on from the penalty spot, adding another goal and Denilson scored his first league goal for Arsenal too.
We really had Newcastle rattled and well, it could have been a lot more than 3 goals but for an excellent performance from the Newcastle keeper Given.

This was the Arsenal team :

Almunia,
Sagna, Toure, Gallas, Clichy
Eboue, Fabregas, Denilson, Nasri
Adebayor,  van Persie

It seems that Walcott had a bit of a knock and was kept off by Wenger as a precaution, but did come on later as a sub.
Arsenal really put in amazing performance that will do a lot to silence a few of the critics that we always seem to have at the start of the season. Even Denilson, who I had previously said did not seem ready for premiership matches put in a great performance. I’m still not sure he is ready to play the whole season in centre midfield but I have to acknowledge he was excellent. Denilson, along with Cesc, who is getting back to his best, Nasri and Eboue, was rampant, fast passing, great strength and movement, leaving a shoddy Newcastle for dead.  Nasri hasn’t really had a bad game for Arsenal yet, he looks a great signing, he has come straight into the team and shown his skill and dedication.
Next Saturday sees Arsenal travel to Blackburn, but we could have some interesting news to report before then as it is transfer deadline day. Rest assured, if Wenger gets out his fat wallet you will be the first to know!

Fulham 1 – 0 Arsenal

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Well I really do not have much to say about this unmitigated disaster.
It’s most depressing to have to write this post , I watched the game on Saturday and Arsenal were truly poor. Arsenal were sunk by a first half goal from Fulham’s Brede Hangeland. You might say that Fulham were lucky to grab a scrappy goal and hang on for the win but Arsenal absolutely did not deserve to win the match. We were completely mediocre, all of our chances went begging and Van Persie wasted 4 free-kicks.

The only positive to take from this frustratingly inept performance is that it should force Arsene Wenger’s hand; he absolutely has to buy at least one first-class midfielder at this point. Arsenal looked so average in midfield, Adebayor and Van Persie were completely isolated up front, we kept giving the ball away far, far, far too easily in midfield.

With Flamini gone and Fabregas injured there is no creativity in our midfield. It is not Eboue’s position and Denilson still is not good enough to play at this level. If we cannot dominate Fulham then we really have no chance this season.

I can’t dwell on this any further, I simply want to say, Mr Wenger get your bl**dy chequebook out, and fast!

Arsenal 1 – 0 West Bromwich Albion

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Well apologies all for the lack of updates, what can I say it is summer and I have been partying it up a bit!
But now the summer is drawing to a close and the new season has begun so you can be assured of regular updates here at Arsenal Online.

So, the new Premier League season is under way, and Arsenal got off to a decent start by beating West Brom 1-0 at the Emirates.
It wasn’t a stellar match by any standard, but it was the right result on the first match of the season (Which Spurs and Man Utd both couldn’t manage :D ), and it was a better Arsenal Team performance than the Champions League qualifier against FC Twente.

This is how they lined up :

Almunia,
Sagna, Gallas, Djourou, Clichy,
Walcott (Toure 72), Eboue, Denilson, Nasri,
Adebayor, Bendtner (Van Persie 69).

Now that Eboue has little chance of getting his old place in the right of defence back from Sagna, he looks likely to play a filling-in role for others in defence and midfield more regularly. And while Arsenal definitely missed Cesc’s set-up play, Eboue actually had a pretty good game covering for him in midfield.

Adebayor had a pretty dreadful match up front, failing to take any of his chances and missing a bit of a sitter in the second half. That said, he always works hard and digs in to help the team, but he is there to score goals! I think I heard him get booed by Arsenal fans at one point when he attempted to strike in from a narrow angle when Nasri was clear in the centre. Not sure about that, but he is a man with something to prove this year.

Speaking of Nasri, the little guy had a great game again, he looks great on the ball and he managed to pop up in the right place to score a goal on his Premier League debut. He looks to be fitting into the side very well and hopefully should only improve as he gets more games under his belt.

Anyway, job done for Arsenal. West Brom really didn’t show too much menace, but a 1-0 scoreline always gives this Gooner a dodgy feeling towards the end (I never liked that Go West song anyway) and I was a little nervous, despite West Brom’s lack of threat, you never know! (I am not what you would call an optimist ;) ) As for the Brom, I think they will be helped a lot this season by Scott Carson saving their arses! They didn’t really look comfortable against us, never really got much of a passing game going, but the Emirates is a tough place to come on the first day of the season. I don’t think they are too bad a side though, I think they might have enough to scare a few teams this year. I did quite the look of Miller up front, maybe not the most skilful player, but the guy is a beast! The young lad Barnett in defence looks like he could become a decent defender in the future too.

Well not much more to say about the West Brom game, it wasn’t the toughest game but 3 points board, Man Utd drew and Spurs lost, what more could a Gooner ask for?
Next up Arsenal are away to Fulham (Saturday, 17:30) which should be a little more of a test and then it’s time to stick a few past McClaren’s Twente in midweek.

In Arsenal Online site news, I have been hard at work over the weekend on a new design for the site, the design is almost finished and I should begin slicing and coding it up soon. Even got the Mrs. to sketch up a cartoon Gunnersaurus so that’s definitely something to look out for. Keep ‘em peeled!

Here’s some highlights of the game :

Vfb Stuttgart 1-3 Arsenal

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Last night saw Arsenal travel to Stuttgart to take on Jens Lehmann’s new team.
It was the first opportunity this season for Arsenal fans to see most of the first team players in action, as well as another chance to see the younger talent. With the exceptions of Toure and Fabregas, I think it is fair to say that almost all of Wenger’s first 11 for this season was on display during the match.

Here’s the line-up :

  • Manuel Almunia (Lukasz Fabianski 45)
  • Gael Clichy
  • Johan Djourou
  • William Gallas
  • Bacary Sagna (Gavin Hoyte 78)
  • Samir Nasri (Jack Wilshere 61)
  • Denilson (Henri Lansbury 85)
  • Emmanuel Eboue (Aaron Ramsey 61)
  • Theo Walcott (Mark Randall 78)
  • Robin Van Persie (Carlos Vela 45 > Jay Simpson 85)
  • Emmanuel Adebayor (Nicklas Bendtner 45)

I traveled to Stuttgart for the game last night and the hosts certainly put on a great welcome for the Gunners. As you can see from the team sheet, Arsenal started with a pretty strong team but worryingly, like so many frustrating matches last season, took a while to get going. The first half showed some promise but was ultimately a scrappy affair, most notably RvP had a good chance to beat Lehmann one on one but looped the ball gently to Mad Jens.

Adebayor, making his first appearance this season, really failed to show any menace in front of goal, displayed some poor touches on the ball and mostly just got himself caught offside. He’ll probably just be happy he didn’t get booed.

For a team that won the Bundesliga the year before last, Stuttgart did not show much in the way of opposition, however in the second half Arsenal were forced to respond when Bastürk scored for Stuttgart in the 51st minute. Happily the Gunners did respond well, putting on a much more promising display and got 3 goals, from Vela (58), Bendtner (65), and Wilshere (73).

Certainly a very positive note to take away from the second half was the excellent performances from players who are looking to establish themselves in the first team this season.
Bendtner had a good half, creating opportunities for teammates, and Vela looked sharp. Walcott and Nasri only shared the pitch for around 15 minutes but there were a few glimpses of great combination play between them.

Here’s some footage from the game :

Sorry it’s not anything exciting like a goal, but well, I was watching the game! :D If you’re looking for videos of the goals you can usually find them at arsenalist

In other happy news, the Telegraph are reporting [1] today that Arsenal picked up £7.5million from the David Bentley’s switch from Blackburn to Tottenham. I’m sure the fans will be sure to thank him for that when Spurs come to the grove :D

Burgenland XI 2-10 Arsenal

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Aaron RamseyArsenal enjoyed a nice little run-out against a sub-sub-par Burgenland side in Austria yesterday evening. Ineptitude of the opposition aside, it was a good chance for the Gooners to get some confidence in-front of goal, Nicklas Bendtner getting 4 goals, Vela 3, Wilshere 2 and Theo Walcott knocking one in as well.
Still, 10 goals which lead Arsenal nicely into what perhaps will be the toughest test of the pre-season campaign so far, Wednesday’s match against Stuttgart. I’m actually going to be travelling to Stuttgart for the game so I hope we see at least a few first team players making an appearance.
