Arsenal thrash Fenerbahce 5-2
Arsenal continued their excellent start in the Champions League by crushing Fenerbahce in the Turkish sides’ hostile Istanbul stadium with some excellent personal performances from Fabregas, Walcott, Diaby and Almunia worth a mention.
Here’s how they lined up :
Eboue, Song, Silvestre, Clichy,
Walcott (Djourou 84), Fabregas, Diaby (Ramsey 73), Denilson, Nasri,
Adebayor (Vela 86).
Arsenal started well, scoring 2 goals in quick succession, Adebayor and Walcott converting from inch-perfect Fabregas passes. Fenerbahce struck back when Silvestre unluckily turned in past his keeper from a shot/cross from Guiza. Arsenal restored the 2 goal lead with an excellent low drive from Diaby, and Song made it 1-4 before Almunia made perhaps his only error of the game, getting stranded after a poor headed back-pass from Song, and Guiza was able to lob the Spanish/English (you decide ) keeper.
Arsenal were not finished with the free scoring however, as Ramsey came on for Diaby and added the fifth, scoring on his Champions League debut.
Fenerbahce played poorly and could almost be said to be flattered by the 5-2 scoreline, they were really not in the game at all, and the fact they managed to create chances and score 2 goals speaks of the defensive problems Arsenal are currently suffering from. It was a very open game with a lot of chances, Arsenal however really dominated with their pace and incisive passing.
The Arsenal midfield were totally commanding, Eboue and Walcott combining excellently on the right – Walcott absolutely destroyed Roberto Carlos the whole time he was on the pitch, the aging Brazilian unable to match Theo’s lightning pace. Adebayor had another good game and grabbed a goal, with the absence of supporting forward Van Persie I thought he put in an excellent performance for the team and held the ball up well.
So, really very much a scoreline to be happy with for Arsenal fans, but also a warning to the Arsenal defence that they need to sharpen up and remain focussed against the better attacking sides.
Next up Arsenal make the short trip across London to face West Ham in the Premiership on Sunday.
